Caiman Lodge, Cuyabeno Amazon Reserve Ecuador – map

Itinerary for 4 days – regular

  • DAY 1We will meet in Lago Agrio at 9:00 am, where we will take private transportation to the entrance of the Cuyabeno Reserve where we will have lunch.
  • DAY 2Trek in the forest approximately 3hrs where your guide will explain the unique ecosystem of Cuyabeno Reserve.
  • DAY 3After breakfast we will head out downstream to the Puerto Bolivar Siona Community and there we will be welcomed by one of the indigenous women who will take us to the yuca plantation to harvest some yucas and show us the preparation of one of their traditions food, Casave (yuca flat bread).
  • DAY 4Early morning bird watching (5:30) and sunrise, breakfast at the lodge and at 9:30 return to the Cuyabeno bridge where we will have a box lunch and then be picked up by a shuttle bus to head back to Lago Agrio, returning to Quito by bus or plane.

Itinerary for 4 days – adventure

  • DAY 1Enjoy the amazon without engine noise and be ecological! We have a special adventure itinerary paddling canoes with extra comfortable seats and provided with solar panels (to have light at our camp at night and to charge cameras).
  • DAY 2After breakfast we will continue paddling down the Cuyabeno river and we will reach the Laguna Grande.
  • DAY 3After breakfast in Caiman Eco Lodge we paddle down the Cuyabeno river to the Puerto Bolivar community of the Sionas. We will have lunch (provided by Caiman Lodge) in the community and then we will meet one of the indigenous women to teach us how to make the traditional Casave bread.
  • DAY 4We get up early (6am) to bird watch and to see the sunrise in the jungle. After breakfast an engine canoe will pick us up and bring us back to the Cuyabeno bridge, where you will get a lunch box.

Trip itineraries

The 4-day trip usually begins on Tuesdays and Fridays, and the 5-day trip on Mondays and Thursdays, but often other starting days will also be available.

Access – transportation

  • The Caiman tour starts and finishes at the town of Lago Agrio.
  • The bus from Quito typically takes between 6 to 7 hours. There are 2 bus options: Private bus for foreigners ($22) or the regular public bus (approx. $10), both leave around 11:00pm the day before the trip starts, and return on the final afternoon of the trip arriving back to Quito around 9pm.
  • Alternatively, there is a direct flight from Quito to Lago Agrio for approx. $200 return fare (subject to change).
