Haciendas are a legacy of ancient colonial days under Spanish rule, built by rich landowners in picturesque parts of the Ecuadorian Andes and passed down through influential families over history.
This tour takes you to 2 of the country’s finest hacienda estates:
La Cienega is situated at the slopes of the majestic Cotopaxi Volcano and during it’s 300 years of history has seen a number of famous historical figures pass through its gates including Charles Marie de la Condamine (part of the French geodesic mission in 1736 that determined the true shape of the earth) and the famous explorer Alexander Von humboldt.
Hacienda Cusin is located close to the beautiful San Pablo Lake on the doorstep of Otavalo and the Imbabura Volcano. It is a charmingly restored 17th century Andean estate steeped in the finest history and tradition with terracotta-tiles, winding cobblestone path-ways, fountain courtyards, towers and perennial gardens that include belladonna, bougainvillea, agapantha, acanthus, foxgloves, orchids, palms, flora, and which attract over 50 species of birds. Antiques and select Andean craft-furnished adorn the salons and guest rooms, most of which boast kingsize beds, log-burning fire places and beamed-ceilings.
Spoil yourself for a few unforgettable days and trace the footsteps of Ecuador’s colonial past.
