Andean Communities

The REAL local experience!

This trip focuses on providing a very local and genuine experience – to explore the local markets used to trade goods between communities, to meet a shaman and learn about his abilities and beliefs, to stay in indigenous communities where few tourists venture. As an added bonus the scenery in this part of the country is also stunning!

The perfect trip for those who want to escape the gringo-trail for a few days!!!

Day Activities Meals
1 An early pick you up from Quito is required in order to visit the Saquisili market - a very local and colourful experience. Your guide will take you to the different market squares full of local produce and animals. After the market we travel by 4x4 to the village of Isinlivi where there is time to settle into the cosy Hostal Llullu Llama – our bed for the night . In the afternoon we visit the local puraca, a man made hill with a sacred meaning to the people that lived here in the past. If there is time left we can go for a hike to explore the surroundings and visit the local woodworking shop. LD
2 After breakfast we go to the community of Malingua to visit the houses of the very friendly local people and to try their traditional dish of guinea pig and a typical herbal tea that the local people use. We can also see a shamanic demonstration of how they can find certain health problems by using a guinea pig. If you like you can try it yourself, if not, the guide will be healed! In the afternoon we travel through picturesque scenery to Tigua where we will spend the night at hacienda Posada de Tigua. BLD
3 Today we travel to Zumbahua to visit the traditional Saturday market. A lot of local people from the surroundings come to this small but colourful market. After the market we drive to the Quilotoa Crater Lake where we will meet with one of the local people who will explain about the spiritual meaning of the lake. We go for a hike either at the crater rim of into the crater to the waterfront. In the afternoon we travel back to Quito with a stop at the famous Tigua painters. BL

NOTE – in order to visit the markets above the trip must start on a Thursday. If you prefer to start on a different day then our sales staff can send you an alternative itinerary.

This tour is small group trip – you may find that you are alone with the guide or that there are also other passengers along too.
