Yachana Lodge

If you take an active interest in eco-tourism then Yachana comes highly recommended! The lodge won the 2004 Condé Nast magazine eco-tourism award, and also earns glowing praise from the Lonely Planet as one of the leading eco-tourism players within South America.

The lodge itself is extremely comfortable, lots of wildlife spotting opportunities, a visit to a traditional shaman healer, as well as learning about the ground-breaking environmental, educational, medical and agricultural projects in the local community.

4 DAYS
Day 1 A 30-minute flight over the Andes from Quito takes us to coca. On a clear day there is an amazing view of the mountains and jungle. Upon arrival you will be met by your guide and head out to the lodge by canoe (approx 3 hours). A packed lunch will be served on-route. At the lodge you will be greeted with a welcome drink and trip briefing as as an introduction to FUNDESINs eco-tourism project sites. Your visit helps support developmental and environmental projects. After time to rest our first activity is a hike up to a beautiful old ceibo tree with wildlife explanations along the way, followed by dinner back at the lodge relaxing to enjoy the sunset.
Day 2 Breakfast. Forest hike to discover the immense biodiversity of the jungle. Although it takes time to tune into the jungle, many of the rainforest secrets are easy to discover with te aid of your guide's keen eyes! Photo opportunities are endless. Lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon we visit the local Agua Santa community where we board a raft downriver to see people panning for gold, before a relaxing float further down the river on giant inner tubes. On route back to the lodge you can visit the Yachana Training Centre to learn about the activities we carry out there. After dinner your guide will take you out on a night walk to see a side of the forest that only comes alive in the darkness including insects, amphibians, repitiles and other animals.
Day 3 Optional bird watching early in the morning. After breakfast a visit to a local farm where you can see and harvest products you have likely never seen before. Returning to the lodge we teach you to make chocolate using the cocoa beans that were harvested at the farm, and coffee from the beans we found, and you will be fixing your own lunch local-style! In the afternoon we take you to visit the local shaman medicine man; after a traditional cleansing ceremony you can learn how to throw a spear and use a blowpipe gun. Return to the lodge for dinner.
Day 4 Early breakfast. Depart Yachana Lodge for flight back to Quito from Coca.
